During early days, you would find websites that could be viewed properly only in certain web browsers. Now, the situation has changed as nobody would want to turn away their customer. Hence, a lot of effort is put into the designing and promotion of the website. And they make sure it is visible to every customer, irrespective of the web browser he is using.
A few tips to design a website that is browser compatible:
COLOR LIMITATIONS
You might have come across a website that has a particular combination of colors in one browser and it changes when opened in another browser on another computer. This change in viewing is dependent on the colors that are available in the color palettes and monitors. For example, a color that suits the eye when viewed in a 24 bit color system might just not be the same in a system that is set to 256 colors. Thus a beautiful picture turns into an ugly one.
Apart from the two colors i.e. white and black, the colors of both palettes – 16-bit and 24-bit, are different. Hence, when the website is designed using the colors on one palette, the color scheme will blend well only if switched to the other color setting.
SCREEN RESOLUTION
The most commonly used screen resolutions are 1024 x 768 and 800 x 640. You need to careful while picking the size of the website. For a fixed width, it will force your customers to scroll the screen horizontally. It can be a little difficult to continuously scroll horizontally to read a few lines. To avoid such cases, the pages are designed using fluid design where it tends to adjust to any screen resolution. It can also be designed as per the screen resolution of 640 x 840 or 800 x 600. The use of percentages for widths also takes care of the issues faced because of screen resolution.
FRAMES
When you design a website using frames, make sure to also view it in lower resolution screens. Websites designed using frames are difficult to view in lower resolution as it provides you with a smaller area for viewing the content. The screen space is also occupied by the outer portion of the frame.
The visitors end up scrolling horizontally to read the content. It could also be difficult to view the content if you choose to turn off the scroll buttons, thus leaving the viewer with no way to view the website. Thus, it is necessary to check the website on all common user screen resolutions.
JAVASCRIPT
People still use browsers that do not support websites using JavaScript. Hence, when you design a website, avoid depending on JavaScript. The use of JavaScript can be avoided with the help of PHP.
Put in a lot of research into the planning of your website. Look out for all kinds of compatibility issues and work on finding a way around it. The alternatives will help you design a website that will help you target a larger audience.
